newEar announces the Third Annual newEar Composers' Competition!

In keeping with our mission of performing innovative and challenging music of our time, newEar announces the Third Annual newEar Composers' Competition for its 19th concert season.

Composers may submit a work in one of two categories:

Category 1 - Composers studying privately or enrolled in a degree program: The selected composer is guaranteed rehearsal time for the submitted work and mentoring sessions with newEar performers, a reading session of their work, a professional recording and a $500.00 honorarium. The submitted work will be considered for possible performance at an outreach concert.

Category 2 - Composers not enrolled in a degree program: The selected composer is guaranteed a performance for the submitted work on newEar's main concert season, rehearsal time and mentoring sessions with the ensemble, participation in the pre-concert lecture, a professional recording of the work and a $1,000.00 honorarium.

Postmark deadline for submissions is February 15, 2012.

There is no age limitation for this competition.

Works submitted should be 7 - 15 minutes total in length and scored for three to seven of the following instruments: flute (piccolo/alto), clarinet (bass clarinet), saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor or baritone), violin,cello, percussion, piano, voice and up to two instruments not listed. Works may also include electronics. Composers should submit a score clearly labeled with their name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Composers submitting a work that includes electronics must also provide all technical information pertaining to the submitted piece on a separate sheet of paper. Please provide a recording when possible, labeled with your name and contact information. MIDI realizations will be accepted. Composers are responsible for obtaining permission for any text used in the submitted piece. Include a SASE if you would like your score and recording returned to you. Category 1 composers are required to submit a valid copy of a student ID or letter from their composition teacher and a $5.00 submission fee. Category 2 composers are required to submit a $10.00 submission fee. All fees must be paid in U.S. funds only and can be paid by check or money order made payable to newEar contemporary chamber ensemble. E-mail questions to Mark Lowry at mlowry@newear.org.

Postmark deadline is February 15, 2012. Late submissions will not be considered. All performance, copyright, and royalty rights of the winning pieces remain with the composers.

The newEar Composers Competition jury reserves the right not to award a prize in either or both categories. All entry fees are collected to help underwrite the administrative costs of the Competition. They do not contribute to prize monies and are non-refundable. The decision of the Competition jury will be final.
